Are there any Chinese shortcuts? [note: I only put "Chinese" as the language this was about because you can only pick one. As I am learning both Chinese and Japanese, I usually mean both when I ask one of these.] For those who are confused by by question, a shortcut is an easier way to write something. Like in English you would say "How are you?", but the shortcut would be "How r u". I personally do not use them. One of my Japanese friends told me long ago that when she was learning English, she knew she was good when she was able to do English shortcuts without thinking about them. The other day, I was was chatting with one of my Chinese friends on QQ, and she asked me a question. I answered and she said, "ic". I was so proud of her that I started clapping (she was struggling with English when we met months ago). Now I am sitting here wondering... Are there any Chinese (or Japanese) shortcuts?

1.Shortcut is the abbreviation form of phase. in chinese some polysyllabics are usually abbreviated to disyllables.Because it meets the leading tendency of Chinese words disyllabism. e.g. 反(fǎn)对(duì)恐(kǒng)怖(bù)主(zhǔ)义(yì)→反(fǎn)恐(kǒng)(anti-terrorism) e.g. 体(tǐ)育(yù)彩(cǎi)票(piào)→体(tǐ)彩(cǎi)(sports lottery) e.g.交(jiāo)通(tōng)警(jǐng)察(chá)→交(jiāo)警(jǐng)(pointsman) 2.Of course, Chinese abbreviations are not limited to two Chinese characters ,especially.most of them are proper nouns. e.g.奥(ào)林(lín)匹(pǐ)克(kè)运(yùn)动(dòng)会(huì)→奥(ào)运(yùn)会(huì)/奥(ào)运(yùn)(Olympic Games) e.g. 世(shì)界(jiè)博(bó)览(lǎn)会(huì)→世(shì)博(bó)会(huì)/世(shì)博(bó) (World Exposition) e.g. 航(háng)空(kōng)意(yì)外(wài)险(xiǎn)→航(háng)意(yì)险(xiǎn)(aviation accident insurance ) 3. If you often see Chinese blog and bbs,you will find many abbreviations. e.g.楼(lóu)主(zhǔ)→lz(original poster) e.g.老(lǎo)公(gōng)→lg(hubby) This kind of abbreviations is the similar with English. And there is the most interesting abbreviations which combines Chinese and English. e.g.姐(jiě)妹(mèi)们(men)→jms(sisters) “jm” is the abbreviation of jiěmèi, “s” means the plural form in English 4.In Chinese there are also some abbreviations which are from Homophonic of Chinese numbers pronunciation. The examples are just like above Eva's ones.

I think you mean slang shortcuts or contractions. As for 'Chinese' ,the one I am learning , I don't think they have any similar shortcuts in that sense. The writting system is too different to apply comparable methods to shorten words. However and as far as I know ,many times you could leave words out such as in the case of 'de' ,when it is repeated many times in the sentence. "Wo de fangzi zuo bian shi wo de pengyou de fangzi." Here there is 3 'de' ,so you can omit the ones in 'wode' for it to sound better. 'wo fangzi zuo bian shi wo pengyou de fangzi." I am sure Chinese natives will be of better help in this regard .

If your looking for something similar to "teh l33t" in English, its Chinese counterpart is called 火星文。 Eva had a few of them down, but it's gonna take huge amount of time and dedication to learn them all, even for a native Chinese. The best part is once you achieved mastery, you can go ahead and blab away and not a single person on mother earth will be able to understand a word your saying....hence its name, 火星文(Martian language). http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%81%AB%E6%98%9F%E6%96%87

yeah,we have, but most of the shortcuts is considered to be some new things, only young people eager to speak that . Shortcuts in chinese is not like you could pick up part of the words to make a whole new sentence. On the other way, maybe 成语, the idiom could be considered to be a shortcuts from a long sentence.
