consignment/shipment
I'm looking for an English word that means something that can be sent by post in general (be it a parcel of any size or a letter). Is there such a word in English? I have got two candidates: consignment and shipment. However, I found that both consignment and shipment mean primarily "an act of sending" – not the thing itself that can be sent. Is that right?
Thanks a lot!

deogratias,
A single item that can be sent by post (mail):
In the US = a piece of mail
mail = material sent or carried in the mail
On the United States Post Office website it is also called = a mailpiece

This is not quite correct. "Consignment" and "shipment" can be used either way, and everyone will know what you mean. There are two reasons for this. 1. Most listeners will instantly be able to determine to which definition you are referring. 2. Usually when it is unclear, either definition will provide the same meaning to the sentence.
There are very few examples that do not fit these two rules.
For example:
"The consignment will arrive at 5 p.m." This refers to the objects, because the act of shipping cannot "arrive".
"The consignment will take place at 5 p.m." This refers to the action, because the objects cannot "take place" at all.
"The consignment will cost $10." It doesn't really matter. Either way, for you to receive the objects, it will cost you $10.
So, if you refer to the "shipment" or "consignment" as the object, you will almost certainly be clear to the listener.
All of the following would be correct -
"Consignment" "Shipment" "Cargo" "Parcel" "Package" "Load" "Goods" "Freight" "Delivery".
