"on vacation" = "on a trip"
I'm going ON A TRIP to Hawaii. I'm going ON VACATION to Hawaii.
WHERE are you going + FOR WHAT PURPOSE you're going somewhere
Where are you going for your haircut? for your prom dress? for vacation?
