is there an english equivalent to the tagalog word wag?
It appears to be a negative, but I just can't figure its usage.
example: Sabi ko sayo wag ka kain ng madami.
Is this corrrect?--I told you that you do not eat much (or enough).

Let me correct first your Tagalog example sentence:
Correct: "Sabi ko sayo wag/huwag kang kumain ng madami."
Wag or Huwag is equivalent to "Do not" in English.
Your answer is correct in using do not, but for more appropriate translation of the sample sentence from Tagalog.
It would be like this ~> "I told you not to eat too much."

To make it simple, the Tagalog word "wag" is basically the shortened form of "huwag" which means "Do not or Don't" in English. And you're absolutely correct, it is negative in meaning. I think the Filipino sentence in your question can also be translated as : I told you not to eat much or I told you, don't eat too much.
Another example for 'wag:
• Wag kang sumuko = Don't give up.
• Wag kang umiyak = Don't cry.
• Wag kang umalis = Don't go.
Hope this helps.
