To be on relief duty in a job perhaps is: estar de guardia o de retén?

Relief duty usually means that you do a job that somebody else has been doing, to give that person (or those persons) some rest (relief).
"Tom was doing relief duty for Ann at the counter, since she had been working for four hours straight without a break."
