what is the difference between 探します and 捜します?

In most cases you should be using 探す. 捜す is used in special cases where you are looking for something that's gone missing: 遭難者を捜す、落とした財布を捜す. It won't seem all that strange to use the former in these situations as well, however using 捜す in every situation will definitely raise some question marks.
