Do both of the following sentences have the same point across?
1. I have always thought we have this great connection. So do you think we can take this relationship to the next level?
2. I have always thought we had this great connection. So do you think we can take this relationship to the next level?

This character is talking to a girl in the present and I was wondering whether to use have or had in the sentence or if there is much of a difference. Personally, I'm leaning slightly more towards No.1 but I don't see that much of a difference.

Answer

No.2 is sounds more natural to my native ears, especially in this context. However, both are ok. No.2 communicates all the meaning of No.1, but also refers to the depth and length of the connection. :-)
