We usually use "good-looking" and "handsome" for men, especially "handsome".
For women, we use "pretty", "lovely", "beautiful".
You'll hear "pretty" used a lot for particular things like eyes, face, hair. But you can also say "a pretty girl" for her overall appearance.
Lovely and beautiful are more grand than pretty. So for something as important as a wedding, you would probably use "lovely" or "beautiful".
C. and D. both work, but C. lovely is better.

In most grammar books, each learning unit has an objective and there are exercises at the end of each unit. If one studies the units reasonably well, they should be capable of doing these questions. But in fact, not all questions come from these textbooks with controlled/confined scope. It is not always easy for learners to do the kind of reasoning deduction that Mojave and laogui have done here when they don’t know what piece(s) information they miss. Learners don't always know what they don't know. I am glad we have italki so we learners can help each other out. Thank you guys for making this a great learning community! :)

Prof is right on the one hand and wrong on the other - how would he explain WHY? It is a matter of usage, and you cannot be expected to know. But a Baidu search would answer you I think. Why in Chinese are 美丽 and 漂亮 not interchangeable for example? 老鬼。 C is correct and D is not, but how to explain why? Lovely has connotations of moral loveliness in addition to visual loveliness; pretty is pleasing to the eye. Beautiful is another candidate too.

I have actually done my work by taking the quiz and checking the answers. I am not doing this for class/credit and I certainly was not asking people to do my test for me (or learn for me). I am sorry if that was how you feel when you saw my question.
Anyway, my choice is C. I chose C because it sounded best to me. (It also happens to agree with the answer in the solution). I did the question right but the decision was made basing on intuition and was not supported by reasoning (hence the question). Maybe B is not preferred because the adj. “handsome” is now commonly reserved for males (although I’ve seen “handsome” used to describe women in Pride and Prejudice). This is as far as my reasoning goes.

In NoAgenda's defense, he usually *does* come up with his own answers through some reasoning and then asks for confirmation and clarification. If you take a look back at his previous questions, you'll see what I mean.
