civic and civil
What is the difference between the words "civil" and "civic"?
I know of a party "Civic Platform", but people usually talk about "civil" rights.

Civic is usually used when talking about a city or citizenship - ie "civic duty" - duty towards one's city. Civil is similar but a little more general indicating a relation to the community as a whole rather than to a particular city. Hence "civil rights". Civil can, of course, also mean polite.
