tailor / sewer
What's the difference?
And what word is more appropriate if in general conversation we want to mention people who simply sew clothes?

Sewer is just someone that sews. A tailor specifically makes clothes. Additionally sewer means: An artificial, usually underground conduit for carrying off sewage or rainwater. The word sewer is most commonly known for this definition. So using the word tailor would be easier to understand.
