ME/MEM/MEN in Malay (Abbreviations?!) Hi, wonder if anyone could help me understand something. I'm currently trying to teach myself Bahasa Melayu which there are scarce resources to do so online. Therefore various things I am still having problems understanding. I have noticed that many words can have me or mem or something similar in front of the main part of the word. For Example: Membeli (buy) is said or used as just beli e.g. (2): Memasak used as just masak Are these abbreviations or does it alter the word in a particular way as we do in English by adding 'ing' for example onto the end of words. I'd be very grateful if anyone responds =] Terima Kasih

theres no difference at all in english for sure lol ... but in formal malay or whats so called Bahasa Baku it goes like that ... but actually nobody uses bahasa baku ... u can only hear it on TV or read it in newspapers ... people use beli only without any prefix ... but anyway u gotta learn the rules and the grammars of the language ... u dont wanna get confused when u somebody suddenly says membeli ... otherwise u think its a new word lol ... actually when i started learning malay ... i thought its very hard to build a good vocabulary ... cause its so hard to memorize words like ( memperbetulkan , ditinggalkan ... ect ) ... but once u can extract the root word ... and why or how to prefixes and suffixes .... u can really master the language in no time .... if u r really willing to learn it .... it takes less than 6 months to speak malay fluently !!!!
