BY THE TIME (exact meaning) Hello, Somebody has told me that the preposition "by" in this case means "before", like in the iogurths you can find the warning EXPIRING BY or BEST BY which means before de date given (he or she explained it to me because I was late when saying "I'm going to be at that point by X time", and I always arrived on time or a litle bit later...). By the way, with this expression, "By the time", I'm a little bit confused. I need to clarify if in the sentence "He had eaten all my biscuits by the time I arrived", I am talking about a specific time before I arrived or an specific time before and until the moment I arrived. Or if I say: I'll be there by 9.00, if I am there at 9:00 I am late... Thanks a lot, I hope you understand my complicated explanations...! Bye!

The sentence you posted "He had eaten all my biscuits by the time I arrived", in spanish would be ''Cuando llegué, él ya se había comido todas mis galletas.'' It makes an emphasis on the moment you arrived and what happened before it. The second sentence, ''I'll be there by 9.00, if I am there at 9:00 I am late.'' doesn't make much sense, the second part I mean. What would be correct is ''I'll be there by 9.00, if I get there after 9:00 I'll be late.'' Hope my answer helps you.

I forgot your second issue with the expression, "By the time". To clarify your sentence "He had eaten all my biscuits by the time I arrived" suggests that you knew that he was eating your biscuits, and you wanted to eat some of them yourself, but he had FINISHED EATING your biscuits BEFORE you arrived. So you are not talking about a specific time or moment, because you were not there when he was eating, you only know that he ate all of your biscuits while you were not there, which was BEFORE you arrived there.

It may be a cultural issue. In the U.S. "Best By" or "I'll be there by 9:00, if I am there at 9:00 I'll be late" means "Best before" and "I'll be there before 9:00, if I am there at 9:00 I'll be late". In these two examples "By" equals "Before".
