What is the difference between abwarten and warten auf?

warten (auf etw., auf jmd.) = waiting
abwarten (etw.) = waiting until something is finished, completed, arrived, over
Wir warten auf den Sonntag. (We wait for Sunday.)
Wir warten den Sonntag ab und dann treffen wir eine Entscheidung. (We wait until Sunday is over and then we make a decision.)
Ich warte auf den Brief. (I wait for the letter.)
Ich warte den Brief ab und dann werde ich ihm schreiben. (I wait until I've got the letter and then I'll write him.)
Er wartet auf den Frühling. (He wait for the spring.)
Er wartet den Frühling ab und wird dann die ersten Blumen pflanzen. (He wait until the spring comes and then he'll plant the first flowers.)

I will try to explain you the difference... "Warten" is the same like "waiting" on English and "abwarten" is like "waiting up" for ex. "Abwarten Bitte, bis der Film startet. "Wait up until the film starts".
