"it tore from the wall" This sentence is right?
Renowned curator Jacques Sauniere staggered through the vaulted archway of the museum's Grand Gallery. He lunged for the nearest painting he could see, a Caravaggio. Grabbing the gilded frame, the seventy-six-year-old man heaved the masterpiece toward himself until it tore from the wall and Sauniere collapsed backward in a heap beneath the canvas.

The sentence in the original paragraph is correct. Nancy wang is also correct that your sentence should read "it was torn from the wall." The original sentence is written with a active voice. The second sentence uses a passive voice.

Is this from "The Da Vinci Code"? :) In your suggested correction sentence, it would have to be "it was TORN from the wall." I'm not sure about the original sentence. Dan Brown is certainly not known for being a great writer. It sounds OK to me though???
