It depends on the gender and number of the word referring to чей, чья, чье, чьи.
чей - masculin singular
чья - feminine singular
чье - neuter singular
чьи - plural
чья машина? - whose car?
чьи машины? - whose cars?
etc.

Чей? - мужской род. Чей это кот?
Чья? - женский. Чья это кошка?
Чье? - средний. Чье это животное?
Чьи? - множественное число. Чьи это коты? Чьи это кошки?
So it dependes on gender and changes in plural case

Yeah. I thought as much, I wondered if someone could perhaps give me some examples. I know I could have looked this up but I've found that engaging with people on here makes things stick in my mind more!
