Honestly, I can not recall using the word "статься" except in combination "может статься" that is "maybe." Например: "Может статься, мы завтра поедем в Суздаль." Perhaps someone will add something else. Становиться 1) (вставать) stand, take one's stand. становиться на цыпочки — stand on tiptoe становиться в очередь — stand in a line 2) (занимать какое-л положение) occupy any position становиться на учет — get registered становиться в позу — strike an attitude становиться на чью-л сторону — take smb's side, side with smb. становиться на якорь — come to anchor 3) (делаться) become, get (+ noun or adj) , grow (+ adj) , turn стать учителем — become a teacher становиться подозрительным — become suspicious становиться жертвой — fall victim 4) (о наступлении какого-л состояния) about the occurrence of any condition становится холодно — it is getting cold

Статься is used in the meaning of случиться/произойти/получиться. We have a stable phrase "Может статься", "с него станется" - these are an "old-timers" you can see it in the books, but will hardly hear it in modern language. It's not the synonim of становиться.
