In my opnion, it's very useful to listen to lots of different accents as you learn, so that you have more experience understanding the different people you will meet.
Listen to native speakers to learn how to pronounce things, of course.

But personally I think communicating effectively and speaking well is more important than trying to sound British or American in particular.

This is very interesting.  Do you think the BBC has kept its "received pronunciation" policy or do you think it has long been very consciously discontinued?

As someone who mostly pronounces English as "BBC English", I would concur! :)  Thus, I would say I speak Standard English with a BBC English-like accent.

However, I'm confused as to what your question actually is?
