Despair & desperation
what is the difference between these words?

They are quite similar - it would depend on the context. Despair has connotations of sadness, or depression, while desperation has connotations of grasping for something, being in a helpless situation but trying to get out of it. Despair also suggests a helpless situation but you're not necessarily striving to get out of it.
