What does mean saying "the nail was lodged in between his toes"? This ia the whole passage. Conversely, a man in Britain jumped off scaffolding and impaled his foot on a large nail. His pain was immediate and severe enough that it required intravenous sedation and pain medication. However, when his boot was removed, the nail was lodged in between his toes and had not injured him. (Reference: Minerva. British Medical Journal. 1995, 310: 70.) The nail was lodged (stuck) in the gap between his toes (or the gap of his toes), so it is saying there was a nail stuck either in his boot or in the gap of his toes, I believe.

It means the nail didn't get into any of his toes, but went through the gap between toes. So the nail did penetrate the boot, but didn't hurt him physically.
