I object to Dan’s reply. Стрёмно has nothing in common with a danger, risk or fear. This word means “bad” (mostly with disdain and (or) unwillingness). For example: Мне стрёмно ехать с ним в одной машине. (It’s bad for me to go with him in the same car. The reasons are I hate him, he’s dirty, he is badly drunk and vomiting, I don’r respect him at all). Какой стрёмный день! (What a shitty day! A day is стрёмный because probably it’s raining). Какая стрёмная собака, она такая тощая! Какой был стрёмный фильм, только время потеряли! But it is rather coarse word and is used mainly amongst the teenagers. Anyway it’s spread in informal talking.

In additional: This word comes from criminal slang... One of using this root: стоять на стрёме - staying alert when other members of criminal group do any crime action (usually within stoling)...

2Ivan: When something is bad for you, usually you are afraid of it.. If you say "мне стрёмно с ним ехать на машине", this means that you are afraid of a car trip with this guy.

"Стоять на стрёме" = держать ухо востро = чутко слышать и следить за всем - это тоже правильно. Так как есть второе значение слова "стремя". Стремя - это косточка, примыкающая к овальному отверстию среднего уха. Отсюда выражение " быть на СТРЁМЕ"
