How different is 'cité' from 'ville'?

Not many people use "cité", I think, except for maybe the suburbs in France... Or it is used in expressions like "cité universitaire". "Ville" is the normal word, and you can say "grande ville" for... large cities! :) This page has good explanations: http://www.linternaute.com/dictionnaire/fr/definition/cite/ I hope this helps!

Vous rencontrerez aussi le mot « cité » en français pour désigner une ville fortifiée : la Cité de Carcassonne = ville fortifiée de Carcassonne la Cité de Saint-Malo = la ville intra-muros de Saint-Malo.
