what's the difference between ' loft' and 'attic'?

In British English, they are essentially synoynms. They are both used to mean the place in the roof of a house that you need a ladder to get into, and which is used for storage. In the UK, people use both 'loft' and 'attic' to describe that place with 'loft' the more common term. Perhaps there is a difference in American English.
