“是……还是……?” 和 “……还是……?”都可以,都是常用的选择疑问句。口语中,有的时候还用“是……是……?”,甚至“……?……?” 你可以把原来的疑问句想象成“(你点的)是中餐还是西餐?”的省略。 你点的是中餐吗?这句话从语法上讲是需要“是”的。但是,口语经常省略。

I'm not a native speaker, but my opinion is: The English translation is, 'What would you like to eat? Is it Chinese or Western food?' This is perfectly reasonable in English, even through it is slightly convoluted. Of course, it would be better to just answer 'Chinese or Western food?'. Don't really need the 'Is it'. Same with your sentence, the first 是 in the second sentence doesn't need to be there, but it's ok, don't bully this poor little 是!

这就是汉语和英语不同的地方,汉语什么都可以省略,而英语基本上主语不能省。不可能说成Is Chinese food?但汉语省略主语随处可见。这里就是省略了主语。这里主语应该是什么呢? 前面说“你想吃什么?”,所以主语就是“你想吃中餐还是想吃西餐?”,两句连起来 “你想吃什么?你想吃中餐还是想吃西餐?” 啰嗦!这句话要省略就会说成”你想吃什么?吃中餐还是西餐?“,主语省了,但谓语没省,因此,还可以省成 ”你想吃什么?中餐还是西餐?“ 如果说成“你想吃的是中餐还是西餐?”,连成一句“你想吃什么?你想吃的是中餐还是西餐?”啰嗦!!! 于是省略成: 你想吃什么?是中餐还是西餐? 还可以再省: 你想吃什么?中餐还是西餐? 结果,两种说法再后省略成了一样的句子。 那么,这个“是”省与不省有没有区别呢?一定是有的,多了这个“是”,语气上会缓和一些,不会有太随便的感觉,而且带有强调的意味,有“到底是什么,由你来决定”那样的意味。但是,这种细微的差别应该没什么人去管了,对于母语者来说,恐怕是随心情,想要就要,想省就省掉了吧。
