跟 meaning from Hi, can you help me? My translation: "Our produce isn’t big enough, so we have to buy from other countries." I think here 跟 implies the meaning of "from", but I can’t find it in any dictionary. I only know 跟 to have the following meanings: 1) with 2) and 3) to follow ..... 4) from(?) What’s up with 跟 in that sentence? Does it mean "from"? Why not use 从? Any help is much appreciated. :)

In this sentence,I think that 跟 is followed by the “object” of the verb. You can also use 从 or 向 here, but 跟 is right too . For example,“跟你学” means “learn from you” ,“you ” is the object of “learn”. I hope that will help you to understand. By the way ,Chinese is very flexible, try to understand it in certain context.

Here 跟 means "through". Actually the literal meaning is "to follow", to mean "with". Another example, without context, "跟我买" can either mean "follow me to buy" or "buy FOR me".
