Hello, Eric! I agree with previous answers. Also in Russia you can often hear colloquial slang expression: "Я хожу в качалку" Евгений

The most popular word for working out/training is заниматься. We rarely say Я тренируюсь в спортзале, because the verb тренироваться mostly means to try to do something, to train your skills. So, to say "I work out at the gym" you should say "Я занимаюсь в тренажёрном зале" :)

Я самостоятельно(myself) занимаюсь в тренажёрном зале.

Я тренируюсь в (тренажерном) зале. Я занимаюсь в (тренажерном) зале. Я хожу в (тренажерный) зал. Words in () are optional in informal conversation.

Я тренируюсь/занимаюсь в спортзале/спортивном зале. If it is a place where you lift weights and do exercises, most people will call it 'тренажерный зал' or, more informally, 'качалка' or 'тренажерка'.
