Find things you enjoy. A language should never be solely in a class, text books and exams... a language should be a culmination of culture, literature, music, films, friends and anything you enjoy now in your OWN language in the very same language you are learning.
So focus on one thing at a time, go at your own pace, find a tv series you like and start with the audio in the new language with english (native) subtitles, then as you progress change those subtitles to the language you are studying, so even if you come across a bizzare situation or a colloquial expression you will understand the phrase that is written, which you can then research as you go.
Read something you enjoy at your level. If you don't enjoy reading then find a friend or a language partner who you can have a chat to each day practicing your structures and vocab. This can even be done without a friend using twitter, if you follow some twitter users who speak the language you will see more of it each day in a context that YOU enjoy.
Overall make sure you ENJOY the process, yes some things in a language can be a drag, but spread your time wisely, don't research a word in arabic and write it over and over and over. When you see a new word, write it down once, understand it by using an online dictionary, then forget it until you use it again or you see it again the next day, the more you see it and use the word in context when talking or writing a message to a friend, the more it'll stick. Experience and enjoyement are what help you remember, so keep at it, and just have fun.
Give it time and you'll find your confidence will grow, your vocab will expand and you will eventually be able to focus on specific things/topics/structures which you find will improve your level.
I hope this helps and good luck!
