How do you cite words in other languages? I was wondering how words in other languages can be cited in the middle of a sentence in Chinese. For example, in English you can say things like "French râper 'to scratch, to grate [cheese]' is cognate to Spanish raspar 'to scrape'". I have no idea how to say this. Shooting blind I'd say: "râper “擦伤、磨碎【干酪】” 这个法语词和 raspar “刮坏” 这个西语词是同源词。". EDIT: Somebody elsewhere told me you say 【语言】词【外语词】, for example, "西班牙语词raspar".

Hi, I do not understand your question that much. But usually, in chinese, if we say: 切碎干酪,means using a knife to cut cheese into slashings. 磨碎干酪,means squashing the cheese. But 擦伤干酪, it is not a correct use.

French râper'to scratch, to grate [cheese]' is cognate to Spanish raspar 'to scrape I'll say that :法语中的 râper(切碎,磨碎)和西班牙的raspar(刮擦)同源。 but râper “擦伤、磨碎【干酪】” 这个法语词和 raspar “刮坏” 这个西语词是同源词 is also ok。 there is no fixed experssion 。

As long as no confusion arises, foreign words can be cited as if they were Chinese words. E.g. 胡安发现preoccupation这个词在中文里没有很好的翻译。 (或)胡安发现preoccupation在中文里没有很好的翻译。 (Juan found that (the word) "preoccupation" doesn't have a good translation in Chinese.) E.g. 在西班牙语中,gustar的用法与tomar, correr等动词相比显得比较特别。 (In Spanish, the usage of "gustar" seems quite peculiar in comparison to that of the verbs "tomar", "correr", etc.) Caveat: Be careful of the use of punctuation marks when citing foreign words in a Chinese context. E.g. 中文里没有单词能翻译英文单词fundamentalist. (The period after "fundamentalist" is in the English style, not in the Chinese style.) P.S.: It is deprecated to directly cite foreign words in Chinese unless it is for linguistic pedagogic purposes.
