'To drive somebody back to the bottle' means making somebody drink (alcohol), again. Imagine a man who does not drink alcohol now, but had had a huge problem with alcoholism in the past, and is now driven back to the bottle (meaning pushed back to drink alcohol) by, for example, some sad event, or by another person's behaviour.
