Crave is much stronger, suggesting perhaps an addiction or unhealthy longing:
"She craves attention."
"I crave sweets."
"He craves affection."

Craving is a very strong desire for something.
A pregnant woman with a craving for plum.
Wanting is an indication of lacking in ability or capacity.
