Could anyone tell me what the large metropolitan about is and how to use?
I read a sentence which is "Foreign tourists feel more secure here than in most other large metropolitan areas in the U.S." . The adjective "large" makes me confused. I think metropolitan is used to descript a big city. It's mean which includes large.Why does "large" here be used to descript metropolitan? Isn't it excrescent here?

Well... 
  In the USA we have many different sized cities.. I think metropolitan is used to described areas.. we can have small metropolitan areas in the USA. Large in the sentence makes me think of New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles... small metropolitan areas... large cities but not the largest in the state...
