"Dashboard" originally was used to indicate the instrument panel (and its housing) of a vehicle. It is used on websites to indicate the particular webpage from which you can access all of the necessary information pertinent to that website. So, like the dashboard in a car giving you vital information about the navigational condition of the car, the dashboard in a website gives you the information you need to continue navigating the website.
