Odd ,
Hi everyone!
Could you explain me the adjective 'odd' when it means 'not often'. I don't find a clear explanation nor good examples.
Thank you so much in advance :D

Try to think of the word 'odd' as meaning 'separate' or 'not connected'.
'He's an odd person', means 'separate' in the sense of 'strange' or 'different' - unlike normal people.
An 'odd sock' means a sock that's on its own - it's been separated from the other sock in its pair. Odd numbers (3, 5 , 7 and so on) are also the same idea - they have an extra unit that's separate from the others because it can't be paired up.
So if you say 'John has retired, but he still goes into the office to help out for the odd day now and again', it's the same idea. John just goes into the office for random, occasional days that are not connected by any routine or schedule.
Or, 'I'm not in regular contact with Maria, but I get the odd postcard from her every year or so' - again, the idea that there is no system, connection or regularity in the postcards you receive.
Does that make sense?

Hi Carlos,
Are you able to come up with any sentence you may have read containing the word "odd"?
This word is usually used to describe the quality of something or someone as strange.
Since you mentioned "not often", I am thinking of a few possibilities.
1) Odd jobs - These jobs are only available once in a while and are not regularly available.
2) Odd hours - Something that happens at an unlikely time of the day.
(I heard a loud knock on my door at an odd hour.)
Hope this help.
Cheers, Lance

In that context, it usually implies a statistically small number or quantity that doesn't fit a pattern, but may occur in any given situation.
Example: These days, few people continue to watch a movie from beginning to end. Most people get up and start leaving when the final credits start to roll, but there is always the odd spectator or two who will remain seated until all the credits have rolled and the lights come on. I think of these people as hardcore cinephiles.

Strange or unusual : different from what is normal or expected
For example:
This place is a little odd compared to the city.
