They don't directly give you anything but they show to other users how much you have contributed to the community. This may affect how ready people are to help you. For example, when I have some free time to correct other people's notebook entries, there may be too many to do all of them, so I will prioritize people who have helped someone else or contributed to discussions before, and points are an easy way to see that.
