What does “beyond” mean?
Sometimes it's really hard for me to understand what does a word of "beyond" mean. In the movie Arrival the character of Amy Addams says:
I'm not so sure I believe in beginnings and endings. There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived.
The only guess I have is the second sentence means something like: There are days that affect your story even though you life hasn't began yet.

Thank you for your question.
My interpretation is that the use of "beyond" is
for a poetic effect. This is the best way I know how
to describe it.
Imagine a box;
[xxxxxx] (your life)
[xxxxxx]
[xxxxxx]
now, imagine a tangent that touches part of the outside
edge of that box:
The same way a tangent might touch a curve.
"Your life" is everything in that box:
experiences, acquaintances, family, ideas, thoughts;
that are part of your life.
Now, anything on the other side of that tangent is
"beyond" your life. That is, it exceeds what
your life contains. So it is beyond you.
A word of caution: "Beyond" can also mean
after death, but I don't think that applies
here, and that is an explanation for another day.
I hope that helps.

"Beyond" usually means "further away". Something "beyond belief" for example is something that is extraordinary hard to believe.
I believe that the message here is the following:
One day defined history more than the rest of her life. When someone dies, their story does not die with them, since people will still hear it for years to come (if it's worth if obviously!). So this day marked her story more than her entire life, which means that it was something absolutely extraordinary. It could also mean that some events "beyond us" (not in our control) can also change our lives.
I guess it's something like this, I won't say more because I would not want to spoil a good movie :)

define your story beyond your life
define your story more than your life----> It means to define your story not only happenings in your life but also some other fantastic stories sparkling in your spirit, mentality or your imaginations.
