1) The connection is slow.

2) Well, what he appears to be saying is that there is no real substance to the parenting. We don't know how to raise a child properly, we just do what was done to us, and our children shall do the same etc. Similarly, if one is disgusted by a thing, one may make a retching sound (the sound that precedes being sick) but one does not actually need to be sick, or, alternatively, one has nothing in one's stomach to bring up.
