In Australia: people often say "a 9 to 5 job", but in reality many office jobs are 8:30am to 5pm, or 8:30am to 5:30pm. Teachers might start a little earlier, and finish a little earlier. Tradespeople might start work at 6am. Factory workers and hospital staff might work a rotating night shift or some really unusual hours.
I once worked in a company (in an office) with very flexible working hours. All staff had to be in the office between 10am and 3pm, unless they were sick or having holidays. All staff had to work 40 hours per week. The start time and end time was flexible. Some staff arrived at 7am and left at 3pm. Some staff arrived at 10am and left at 6.30pm or 7pm. Some staff had a 20 minute lunch and other staff had a 1 hour lunch. As long as everyone had completed 40 working hours by the end of the week, and had completed the work assigned to them, the boss did not mind.

In the US, traditional working time is 9AM to 5PM.
A 15 minute break in the morning, 30 minutes for lunch, and 15 minute break in the afternoon.
However there are many many exceptions to this.
I find this interesting.. I look forward to more answers
