Technically, the Italian word "frigorifero" translates in English to refrigerator. In the U.S., industrial sized units are sometimes referred to as "coolers." As a matter of clarification, the term "fridge" came from one of the earliest makers of refrigerators, Frigidaire. Like a lot of products, people began using the brand name to cover all refrigeration units, including those produced by other companies (sort of like Kleenex now refers to all brands of tissue). Eventually, the word was shortened to "fridge" but consider this slang - Refrigerator (in a home) or Refrigeration unit (for other chillers as in trucks, industry, etc.) is a better term.
