状況 is often translated into "situation". You can illustrate 状況 of, e.g.,weather, a scene, a process, what happens.
状態 is translated into "condition" or "status". You might focus on "how it is going", like illness, description of materials, or so.
For example, when a traffic accident occurs, if you mention what happened and what extent it is bad or describe the traffic jams, you explain "状況". And when you describe the deformity of the vehicles or the condition of the victims, you explain its"状態".
