The phrase "I am a mess"
I can guess what the phrase "I am a mess" means. I heard this phrase in movies and songs. But I'd like to hear the versions from you, please. Could you please explain it to me?

It just means that you either LOOK or FEEL like a mess. Aka, in physical disorder/chaos or emotional disorder/chaos.
You might say 'my life is a mess' but to say 'I am a mess' seems to imply something about your appearance or current emotional state.

It depends on the context but usually, it would mean something like: my life is chaotic; everything is wrong in my life; I don't know where I am going in life.
