"Nope" - the degree of informality Hello everyone! Sorry, it may seem like a non-serious question but it isn't. After changing my phone's language settings I noticed the following message: "This page is in Russian. Translate it to English?". There were two options: 1. TRANSLATE 2. NOPE So, the question is: is Google Chrome being informal with me, or is this "nope" not as informal as I originally thought?I used to think that "nope" is an informal answer to a "yes/no" question which sounds a little jokingy and/or intensifies denial AND can be used exclusively when you're talking to a family member or a friend of yours. I still think it's not a good idea to say "nope" answering customs officer's "Do you have anything to declare?" even if there really aren't any banned or resticted goods in your baggage. But what about the situations in between? For example, (1) when a cashier at a burger shop asks you "Anything else?" - is it rude to answer "nope"? If yes, would a smile make it appropriate or would it make it even more awkward? Or, say, (2) when a person standing beside you in a queue asks you "Oh, hey, have you ever bought this *something*?" - is it OK to answer "nope"? Does it sound like "don't talk to me", in your opinion - no matter the intonation? Or, generally speaking, is "nope" as informal as, say, "mm-mm" or "uh-uh"? I know all that probably sounds strange but I'm really not sure about it now... Any opinions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
