What Are Some Common Chinese Chat/IM Shorthand Symbols (like 88, 81)? What Do They Mean? Please state in pinyin, characters, and English a few chat shorthand idioms. For starters, what does 88, and 81 mean? What are some others (thought I saw 888 or 881)? Please explain in pinyin, characters, and by an English definition.Don't forget to tell me in pinyin also please.

You gotta look at the sounds they make: 88 = ba ba which sounds simliar to "bye bye" 881 even more so there are more 74 = 去死 (Chinglish "Go die!" lol, i love Chinglish sometimes) 56 = 无聊 1314 = 一生一世 8客气 = 不要客气 3Q = (San Q) Thank you There are more but I forget... Once I created a budget for work and the results were not good! The total price was 514,514 RMB haha, 514 sounds like 我要死 (I'm going to die) so I gave the guy a discount to make the number sound nicer! HAHA Just remember, if you see numbers in place of words, try to imagine what common sentence/phrase they sound like :-)

88,881 and 886 means byebye. Because in Chinese byebye is 拜拜, 拜拜's pronunciation is similar with 8's in Chinese. So we use 88 instead byebye. It is convenient and quick :)
