I usually play some traditional Christmas carols: Silent Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, and dozens more! I probably indulge in some old Bing Crosby songs, such as "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas." I probably watch the film too... even though I must've seen it 10 times! Also John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War is Over), Bruce Springsteen -Santa Claus is Coming To Town, Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song, Frank Sinatra - Let it snow!

The number 1 Christmas carol on "Classic FM" is usually "O holy night", which in fact is a French song. I like "In the bleak midwinter". There are two traditional English regional carols which are still popular, the Coventry carol and the Sussex carol. It would be nice to see contributions from people from N Ireland, Wales and Scotland as there are bound to be some favourites in those places that are less well known in England. I recommend tuning into Classic FM, the self-styled "home of Christmas music". You will hear all the classic Christmas songs there. Their website shows their playlist.

Personally, I like Tim Minchin's "White Wine in the Sun" and Nick Lowe's "Christmas at the Airport", but neither of them is particularly well-known. At a higher cultural level, Handel's "Messiah" is always popular. In America, other common christmas songs include "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer", "chestnuts roasting on an open fire", "silent night, holy night", "good king wenceslas", "over the fields and through the woods", "mary did you know", "jingle bells", "Feliz Navidad", "O come all ye faithful", "all I want for Christmas are my two front teeth", and many, many others.

The answers above include so many good old Christmas songs! There are a few missing though, everyone hears them playing on the radio and TV a lot every year before Christmas. They're Mariah Carey's 'All I want for Christmas is You' as well as Wham! - 'Last Christmas'. My personal favourites are probably 'The Home Alone' soundtracks, which are also really popular :)

Hi I know about a song called "Merry xmas everybody" from Slade. I think this song is one of the most heard in the UK at this time of year. "War is over" from Beatles probably is the first one in UK. :)
