In Spain. "Empresa" is the normal word. I think we only say "Compañía" for big companies and I only can hear this word on TV, radio.. etc. We don't use "compañía" normally.

Compañia = la firma, empresa = la actividad. more or less. if you speak about the people and its social area is "la compañia", but if you talk about the activity, organization, methodology, marketing and all these things is " Empresa". normally in newspapers, or media is "noticias empresariales". if internal comunication: "Noticias de la compañia/la empresa, not much difference.
