What does this korean expression mean " 병풍 뒤에서 향 냄새 맡는 거야 "? 병풍 뒤에서 향 냄새 맡는 거야 So i've been hearing this expression in quite a few kdramas ( Eulachcha Waikiki ep 13 , Modern Farmer ep 2 ) and some other The english subtitles are always : " we'll be in the grave or we won't be alive " But nothing in this sentence slightly resembles the translation !!! When i try to translate it ... it tells me that it means: (We will be smelling incenses behind the screen) So what does the expression mean exactly and where did it came from ?

병풍 뒤에서 향 냄새 맡다 means "to die" 병풍 means a folding screen According to the Korean traditional funeral, the dead body is placed behind a folding screen and people burn incense on the table in front of the folding screen. https://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=1102244 https://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=3561036

After people died, we have a ceremony in every year. It's called 제사 and we set a few things in 제사. One of that is 병풍, the screen(the word in translation) and 향, the insense. People think there may be the spirit of died peopld behind the screen and we do formal things to hornor the death. So 병풍 뒤에 향냄새 맡는다 includes meaning that you are gonna die. For example, 병풍 뒤에 향냄새 맡고싶어? means would you like to be died?. The expression is just metaphor. If you don't get what I'm saying and want it be clear, You can google 제사 and see some images :)
