how can I say "I was wondering..." in Japanese? こんにちは、皆さん。 皆さんは私を助けられることが望みます。 I would like to know how I can say "I was wondering..." (Like: "I asked myself...") For examble if I want to say "I was wondering why you are still awake" I learned the "~の か"- form for indirect questions. -->どうして この時にあなたがまだ目を覚ましているの か、知りません でした。" And I learned the "~かな"- form for "I'm wondering.." --> どうして この時にあなたがまだ目を覚ましているかな。 But both sentences don't really express what I want to say, right? Thanks a lot for any answer =) ご助力ありがとうございます。

Which of the following three does this "I was wondering" belong to ? 1. speak to others in conversation. 2. say to yourself in your mind. 3. writing (not saying) 4. polite expression, euphemism After getting your answer, let me write translations. ........................................................................ (The following is for my training, please correct me if you don't mind) ........................................................................ Welchem von den folgenden drei Szenen gehört dieses Gesetz "I was wondering..."? 1. sprechen zu anderem 2. sagen zu sich im Herzen. 3. schreiben ( nicht sagen) Nach Ihrer Antwort schreibe ich Übersetzungen. '-------------------------------------------------------------------- Having exchanged comments with Sandra, I found that "I was wondering ...." is an Euphemisum or a polite expression. Showing politeness? Then the solution is easy, You can use "敬語". The sentence "I was wondering why you are still awake" will be like this. 「こんな時間なのに、まだ起きていらっしゃるのですね」 ※ There is no literally corresponding expression in Japanese with "I wonder...." ---------------------------------------------------------- Durch die Sandras Bemerukungen habe ich finde dass "I was wondering ...." ein höflich Ausdruck oder ein Euphemisum ist. Euphemisum ? Dann haben Sie eine einchae Lösung, "敬語" nutzen. Der Satz, "I was wondering why you are still awake" wird übergesetzt wie "こんな時間なのに、まだ起きていらっしゃるのですね。 ----------------------------------------------------------

Hi, Sandra. "I was wondering why you are still awake" I would translate the sentence into "なぜ あなたは まだ 起きてる のかな(と [私は] 思う)" If you want to say "I was wondering..." in Japanese, you can say "... のかな(と [私は] 思う)" In my opinion, this is one of the best expressions.

Hi Sandra! I wonder... is often translated as 「~かな、と思う」like other people have already explained. I would say 「どうして(あなたは)こんな時間に起きているのかな、と思いました。(or 思っていました either works)」
