Question regarding "curse word" in Spanish I learned to speak Spanish as a result of living in Puerto Rico for 7 years and marrying a Puerto Rican woman who didn't speak English. In Puerto Rico, I learned to say "coño" to effectively mean "damn". However, in the states, the people with whom I speak Spanish tend to be Mexican and say that "coño" is extremely vulgar. I was also taught to say "maldita sea", but generally people would say "coño". Opinions please :) (To be clear, my ex-wife never cursed! It was friends and co-workers who taught me the curse words.)

Although it may vary the level of vulgarity depending on the country, As any swear word, "coño" is going to be always vulgar. Probably in Mexico is extremely vulgar and in Puerto Rico (as you say) and in Spain (where I come from), medium vulgar.

Coño is also used in Venezuela, the coarse words change depending of the country you're. I'm from Colombia, and we rarely use that word but instead, we use: Hijuepueta! that can mean different things depending of the context. For example Tu eres un hijueputa (you're a mother f**) / Perdí la materia, hijueputa! (I lost the subject, damn!) In latin american culture I could say that we have a lot of coarse words that we will need to make a book.
