What does "a guy on the staff" mean? What does "a guy on the staff" mean? Please also provide examples. Thank you in advice. ___________________ Thanks everyone. I saw this phrase in a book, and the full sentence is as following: 'When they were taking a rest in the cafeteria, a guy on the staff told them that the weather was too bad for visitors to go up the mountain.' Why can't it just use 'the staff' instead of 'a guy on the staff'?

A guy on staff means a person that works somewhere. Ex: A guy on staff at the restaurant is always late for work. The staff is the group of people that work somewhere. Ex: The staff had their annual Christmas party.

Depends on the context, but I would generally view that to mean the guys who work for a company or at a job. For example, at a restaurant, the waiters as a collective group can be called staff. So "a guy on the staff" would mean one of the male waiters in that restaurant.

You could just say "the staff" told you something. But as stated the sentence tells the reader something more specific. One male person, "a guy," who works there, told you something.
