while or when? Hello! What would you use in #16 while or when? Why? The 18 is really hard, could you please give me a clue? Thank you very much! Adventures at sea Yann Martel’s Life of Pi is a novel that you should (0) never/not read late in the evening if you intend to get (13) to sleep at night! It is definitely a page-turner; I personally found it absolutely impossible to (14) put/lay down before I had read it cover (15) to cover. The book tells the unusual story of a sixteen-year-old boy, Pi. (16) While / when Pi is making the voyage from India to Canada on a boat full of zoo animals, his boat sinks. Being the (17) only human survivor, he finds (18) ......?........ sharing a lifeboat with a menagerie of creatures, including a hyena, a zebra, an orang-utan and a 200 kg Bengal Tiger. Although the book is written in a fairly simple style, (19).......it..............examines some very complex themes. In (20) general, the novel reads like a fable or a fairy tale as it discusses the question (21) of faith and belief. If you read only (22) ......?........... good book this year, I (23) would strongly recommend Martel’s Life of Pi. The writer has come up (24) with a story that is enlightening, humorous and therefore highly entertaining. The book tells the unusual story of a sixteen-year-old boy, Pi. 13 - to get SOME / ANY sleep 14 - WHILE 18 - HIMSELF WHILE and WHEN I personally use WHILE for longer background actions and WHEN for foreground actions. - While I was cooking, my sister telephoned. (or My sister telephoned while I was cooking.) - When my sister telephoned, I was cooking. (or I was cooking when my sister telephoned.) However, this is a subset of the common, acceptable uses of WHILE and WHEN. Practical English Usage by Swan is an excellent book for English teachers and advanced English language students. 3rd edition p. 67 To talk about actions or situations that take place at the same time, we can use "as," "when" or "while." There are some differences. 1 - "backgrounds" - as, when or while We can use all three words to introduce a longer "background" action or situation, which is/was going on when something else happens/happened. - As I was walking down the street I saw Joe driving a Porsche. - The telephone always rings when you are having a bath. - While they were playing cards, somebody broke into the house.

For (16) both would be fine, but "while" is more natural in this context. I think (maybe) "when" has a habitual feeling to it in this context, implying we all go on a voyage at 16 from India to Canada on a boat full of zoo animals (which I don't think many people do, haha). I'm not sure, though. (18) should be "himself". "I find myself", "you find yourself" etc. means that the person is suddenly in a situation they did not expect to be in. In this case, Pi "found himself" sharing a boat with a menagerie of creatures - it was unexpected to him, and strange.
