a white suit in Friends. what's so funny? Ross: (entering, wearing a white suit with a little red bow tie) Hey, you guys! Guess what? Rachel: (looking at the outfit) 【Got a job on a river boat?】 Ross: Y'know what I didn't wear this suit for a year because you hated it. Well, guess what? You're not my girlfriend anymore so... Rachel: Oh I see, so this suit is 【making a point】. Ross: Right. Rachel: Now that you're on you're own, you're free to look as stupid as you like. Ross: (to Monica) You like it right? Monica: Oh absolutely. I like it even more on you than I did on 【Colonel Sanders】. (Ross starts to leave) Ross! Ross! I'm kidding! Rachel: Yeah, come here! Monica: What-what was it you were gonna tell us? Rachel: Yeah. Oh! Was how you 【invented the cotton gin】?!

I don't remember the exact suit, but I think in the 90's/early 2000s, it was a pretty bad-looking suit. Still, this scene doesn't sound very funny... In this context, the suit "making a point" means that the suit is acting as a symbol for Ross' freedom to do as he pleases now that he is no longer dating Rachel. When Ross agrees, then Rachel turns that statement around on Ross by telling him he is "free to look as stupid as [he likes]." Synonym phrases would be "So the suit is making a statement" or "So the suit is a symbol." All 3 of the other references (the riverboat/Colonel Sanders/cotton gin) evoke the image of a Southerner. In the United States, wealthy white men in the 1800s and very early 1900s would sometimes wear light-colored linen suits. This was a sign of their wealth for having the fabric clean and crisp, and also kept them cool in the humid heat (the Southeastern US is very humid all year long) as the sun would reflect from the light-colored fabrics. It later became a tacky uniform for some people in work like guiding riverboats. There has been a cultural divide between the Yankee northern mentality and the South since at least the Civil War era, so making fun of Southerners goes along with the "cosmopolitan" New Yorker image of Friends. Colonel Sanders was not a military colonel, but a "Kentucky Colonel," which is just an honorary title that the governor of the state of Kentucky can give to anybody they want... some governor chose to give it to Sanders because of his good Kentucky-style cooking. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. I don't think he wore white suits, but again, it just fits with the Southerner-image joke. The cotton gin is a mechanical machine that could separate cotton bolls from their seed, which really increased efficiency when turning cotton into fabric. People say that America rose to greatness because of the cotton gin, which helped propel the US into the industrial revolution.

1. They don't necessarily wear red bow ties, but many people who work on cruise boats wear white, formal suits. 2. In a debate or argument, you are trying to make/prove your point. In the same way, Ross' suit is trying to prove his point that he doesn't need her anymore, by wearing the suit she hates. 3. Yes, this is referencing the KFC founder, who always wore white suits. He was never in the military; it is just an honorary title. 4 . The cotton gin is a machine invented around 1800 that processed cotton and made cotton production much faster. The inventor (Eli Whitney) did not wear white suits. She is just saying that it looks old-fashioned.

I know the scene. (Which apparently most of the people who have responded don't.) 1. The suit Ross is wearing looks like the kind of suits that people wore in the late 1800s in a very specific part of the US. To a modern viewer, it looks like a costume. In translated terms, it is kind of like he's wearing a chaofu. Those look kind of neat, but I'm guessing that people don't wear them to work. Riverboat - is a way that people would have commonly traveled a long time ago. Today, there are riverboats, but the people who work on them dress in an old-fashioned manner. So the line about the riverboat is pointing out that he is dressed oddly. 2. Rachel is pretty stylish. When she dates someone, she will ask them to wear more stylish clothing, because she will want to be seen with someone who dresses nicely. She would have objected to odd looking clothes. "Making a point" the point is that he doesn't have to dress the way Rachel wants now that they aren't a couple anymore. 3. "Colonel Sanders" is the guy from KFC restaurants (I think they even have his picture on Chinese KFCs). He dressed in an old-fashioned manner. Monica is saying that he looks like that guy. 4. The cotton-gin is an invention from the 1800s. It's another "you're dressing funny and old fashioned" joke.

2. I haven't seen this scene, but "make a point" probably means he's only wearing it because he can, now that he doesn't need to listen to Rachel's opinion about it. It's a statement, meaning he's saying something by wearing it. He makes the literal statement: "You're not my girlfriend anymore, so..." to imply that he can wear it now, and he makes the symbolic statement by wearing it. 3. Yes, Colonel Sanders is the KFC founder. He isn't a colonel in the army though. In his case, the title 'colonel' is honorary, not a military rank. He's a Kentucky Colonel, which is a title given to people of noteworthy accomplishments. There are a few of these 'Titles of Honor', like Knights, Dames, and Fellows. More information about these can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_of_honor I hope this is helpful!

my question: I understand Monica and Rachel are just making fun of Ross’s white suit, but is the suit that terrible? I find it ok. 1, people who have a job on a river boat like to wear a white suit and red bow tie? 2. what does “make a point” mean here? 3. Is Colonel Sanders the KFC founder? is he also a colonel in army? 4. what is a cotton gin? who invented cotton gin? did the inventor like to wear a white suit? thanks you very much for your help~
