Kevin R. Fernández
How do I write a foreign name in Mandarin that is not common? My name is easy to find, even Google translate has an equivalent because it's a common name. Kevin is 凯文 in Mandarin, but for example, Melarie is not found on websites or translators. The closest one may be Melanie, but that neither will give the correct Kanjis for Melarie. I arrived at the conclusion it is 梅拉日 using Wikipedia's Transcription into Chinese Characters. This link was used to translate the name https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcription_into_Chinese_characters

Two ways of translating... The most common is by transliteration without meaning. The 2nd is more difficult: translation by meaning which one has to find the meaning first and some, don't have meanings at all, just a made up sound. The best is able to approximate the sound and meaning. This is specialized work. For example, Coca-Cola 可口可樂, Revlon 露華濃, taken from a line from a poem, praising the beauty of 楊貴妃, one of the four most beautiful woman in Chinese history. 梅拉里 means plum blosson being pulled inside /into miles. Melarie: I suggest using 梨 instead of 里 as you had started off with a flower. Instead of 拉 = pull, use 花 or 家 as these two characters rhyme with 拉. So 梅家梨 = pear blossoms in the garden of pear blossoms. 梅花梨 - Plum blossoms looking like pear blossoms.

The Chinese way is strange for me. They have words that have closer sounds to English words, bit they use other words instead. Maybe because they don't want the characters to be weird! So, for example, they have words that sound exactly like Joe, but use characters that are pronounced 'Chiao'!!..

Just a gentle reminder, don't use 日 as your name especially if you are planning to live in china. Nowaday it is an alternative way to say fck.
